WHERE CHOICE LIVES
The One Moment Rule
The One Moment Rule is our signature practical framework for the moment before an automatic reaction takes over.
It helps you notice what is happening earlier, create space between impulse and response, and choose a more intentional next step.
Pause. Choose. Shift.

THE MOMENT BEFORE THE PATTERN
The reaction is often already beginning before it becomes visible.
A repeated response rarely starts at the point where we speak, withdraw, over-explain, agree too quickly or react under pressure.
It often begins earlier, with a feeling, thought, body signal, assumption or familiar internal pull.
The One Moment Rule brings attention to that earlier point, where awareness can create enough space to notice what is happening and choose what comes next.

The aim is not to remove emotion. It is to notice the moment before emotion decides the response for you.
01
PAUSE
Notice what is happening before the response takes over.
Pause is the moment of awareness. It helps you slow the automatic pattern enough to recognise what you are feeling, thinking or about to do.
- Notice the emotional signal
- Spot the familiar reaction
- Create a little space
Pause. Choose. Shift. A practical way to respond differently.
The One Moment Rule is simple in structure but powerful in practice. It helps you notice what is happening, interrupt the automatic response and move towards a more intentional next step.
The rule is simple: awareness creates space, space supports choice, and repeated choice creates change.
THE THREE PARTS OF THE RULE
02
CHOOSE
Decide how you want to respond instead of reacting on autopilot.
Choose is where intention begins. It helps you bring your values, judgement and wider perspective back into the moment before the familiar response takes over.
- Return to what matters
- Consider the better response
- Respond with more intention
03
SHIFT
Turn that more intentional response into a different pattern over time.
Shift is what happens when a different response is repeated often enough to create change. It is not about perfection. It is about building a more useful pattern step by step.
- Practise a different response
- Strengthen what works
- Build change over time
WHERE THE MOMENT SHOWS UP
The moments that shape the outcome are often small and familiar.
The One Moment Rule can be used wherever an automatic response begins shaping what happens next.
It may be the moment before you agree to something you do not want, become defensive, withdraw from a conversation, over-explain yourself or respond under pressure.
The situation may be different. The pattern underneath it can feel very familiar.
01
Boundaries and people-pleasing
Notice the moment before saying yes automatically, over-explaining a boundary or putting another person’s comfort ahead of your own needs.
02
Difficult conversations
Recognise the point where defensiveness, avoidance or frustration begins influencing how you listen, speak or respond.
03
Emotional reactions
Create space between the first emotional signal and the familiar response, without dismissing or suppressing what you feel.
04
Pressure, decisions and work
Pause before reacting to urgency, criticism or uncertainty so that judgement, communication and professional values can return to the decision.
The One Moment Rule does not require a perfect response. It begins with recognising that another response may be available.
Sometimes the body notices before the mind has named what is happening.
BODY
Tight chest, Clenched jaw, Shallow breathing, Restlessness
Before a familiar response becomes visible, there may already be small signals that something has shifted.
A change in breathing, tension in the body, a sudden thought or the urge to defend, withdraw or agree quickly can all become useful points of awareness.
THOUGHT
I need to fix this, I cannot disappoint them, I need to explain myself, Something is about to go wrong
EARLY AWARENESS
NOTICE
Awareness creates space.
BEHAVIOURAL PULL
Agree, Defend, Withdraw, Over-explain
The signal is not the problem. It is information about what may be starting.
These are examples, not diagnoses. Different people may notice different physical, emotional, cognitive or behavioural signals.
WHERE CHOICE LIVES
What could change if you noticed the moment earlier?
Some patterns are easy to recognise after they have played out. Coaching can help you understand what happens earlier, what keeps the pattern active and where a more intentional response may become possible.
The aim is not to create a perfect reaction. It is to build greater awareness, steadiness and choice in the moments that matter.
A Clarity Call is an initial conversation to explore what you would like support with and whether the approach feels right for you.
One moment may not change everything. It can change what happens next.
Support is available to adults aged 18 and over.
